The Arden – A Rough-and-Tumble Horse

The arden is a rugged and heavy breed of draft horse, originating in France and Belgium. It is famous for its hardiness, and has earned a reputation as one of the best artillery horses in the world.

The name arden is a combination of the French words for “heavy draft” and “mountain”, as it was originally bred in the mountains of Gaul, where they were able to withstand harsh winters. They have a long, thick mane and are willing to work, with strong bone and a low, sturdy frame.

They are also known for their strength and agility, making them a favourite among the Roman military as war horses. They were regarded as the toughest of the European horse, and were a staple of the cavalry for more than a thousand years.

Their ancestry is a complex tale, spanning over 1000 years of wars and sieges, and they have played key roles in the fate of Europe throughout that time. During the medieval period, they were prized for their strength and bravery.

For the modern day, they are still used in the military for a variety of tasks. They can be found in the armies of both Europe and North America, as well as on many military training grounds around the world.
