What Is Cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity protects internet-connected devices and systems from malicious attacks. It includes software and hardware designed to prevent phishing, ransomware, data breaches, and financial losses. It is also known as information security or data protection. Its benefits include protecting personal privacy, boosting productivity, and improving business management processes.

Cyber attack motivations vary. Some attackers are thrill seekers, others are vandals or activists seeking to cause disruption, and a growing number are state-sponsored, with the aim of gathering intelligence or monetary gain. It is important to understand that even small breaches of cybersecurity can cost a company money, damage its reputation, and negatively affect its stock value.

The most common methods for cyber security are firewalls, limiting access to the server and network, encrypting data, using two-factor authentication, and backing up files. The importance of these measures cannot be overstated, especially when considering that a single data breach can result in loss of customer confidence and millions or billions of dollars in lost revenue for a company.

The constant evolution of cyber threats means that the practice of cyber security needs to be continually reviewed and updated. This can be a challenge because hackers work around the clock to find new ways to attack systems. To combat this, security experts regularly release updates and patches for vulnerabilities. However, the savvy hacker will try to find a way through those patches by looking for weaknesses in patched files. To help counter this, end-user education is offered to teach users to avoid click-bait, not plug in unknown USB drives, and other best practices. MDR
